Immersive Electric Guitar Recording | Behind Immersed: Episode 5

Dive into an extraordinary guitar recording adventure with an immersive 17-channel guitar capture that redefines sonic possibilities! In this behind-the-scenes exploration, we break down a groundbreaking recording session with virtuoso guitarist Ted Quinlan at Humber College’s studio.

Our innovative signal chain transforms a traditional mono guitar setup into a spatial audio masterpiece. Using a Radial JX 44 routing box, we split the guitar signal across multiple amplifiers – a reissue Fender Princeton, a digital Fender amp, and strategic room microphones. The setup includes carefully placed DPA 4000 series and Coles 4038 microphones to capture not just the sound, but the entire sonic environment.

The magic happens when the guitarist can hear and react to the rich, expansive soundstage in real-time. By creating an LCR (Left-Center-Right) configuration with three distinct amp captures and immersive room microphones, we’ve crafted a recording technique that goes beyond traditional tracking.

This isn’t just recording – it’s sonic exploration that pushes the boundaries of guitar sound capture, offering unprecedented flexibility and depth in post-production. Get ready to hear guitar recording like never before!
