Immersive Kalimba Recording & Orchestration | Behind Immersed: Episode 27

Dive into an extraordinary recording session where traditional meets innovation. In this episode, we explore the virtuosic world of kalimba through the lens of master musician Morito Marquez. Using a minimalist approach with just the right gear – including a Sem Arvill 37A microphone and a carefully curated pedal board – we transformed a simple instrument into a sonic landscape.

Our goal? To capture the communal spirit of kalimba while pushing its sonic boundaries. By strategically layering recordings across different speakers, we created an immersive experience that challenges everything you thought you knew about this traditional African instrument. From clean DI signals to wild effects that make the kalimba sound like a synthesizer, this session was about breaking musical boundaries.

The magic happened through trust, improvisation, and technical precision – tracking each layer with surgical accuracy and creative freedom. The result? A hyper-mono recording that brings every nuanced texture to life, proving that sometimes less truly is more.

Get ready to have your musical expectations completely reimagined.
