Immersive String Recording: The Venuti Quartet’s Sonic Experiment

In the Humber College auditorium, we’re pushing the boundaries of classical recording with the Venuti String Quartet. Our microphone setup is a sonic playground—a five-channel array of Neumann M149s captures the ensemble’s performance from an audience perspective, while experimental mics like the Neumann dummy head and vintage SM2 add unique textures.

Spot mics tell the individual instrument stories: vintage Neumann tube mics on violins, cello, and viola, capturing every nuanced performance detail. Four DPA 4061 microphones create height channels, expanding the spatial landscape.

The magic happens organically—musicians performing without headphones, blending naturally in the acoustic space. Our 11-channel hall array, with Schoeps and DPA microphones, creates a spherical capture that transforms the recording into an immersive experience.

This isn’t just a recording. It’s a sonic journey that places listeners right in the heart of the performance.
