Composing Pendulum – Creating Music in Dolby Atmos | Behind Immersed: Episode 21

“Pendulum” is a sonic journey that explores the intricate world of immersive music composition. Born from a collaboration with tabla virtuoso Ed Hanley, this track deconstructs rhythmic complexity through a mesmerizing Lydian scale exploration. By recording tabla at different pitches and strategically panning them across 15 speakers, we created a living, breathing musical landscape.

The piece features a brilliant improvisation by Carnatic vocalist Suba Sankaran, who weaves her voice through the harmonic textures, and includes a mind-bending tabla breakdown where each drum’s performance is meticulously step-sequenced across the immersive space. Drummer Marito Marquez adds rhythmic depth with carefully crafted kick and snare patterns, each recorded to capture the nuanced spatial dynamics.

This composition is more than music – it’s a molecular exploration of sound, where preparation meets spontaneity, and technology serves artistic vision. “Pendulum” represents a true fusion of Indian classical traditions, contemporary production techniques, and immersive audio design.
