Composing “Tapestry” | Behind Immersed: Episode 17

“Tapestry” is a sonic journey that blends cutting-edge immersive technology with raw musical creativity. Co-written with Sean Rompre, the track emerged from their long-standing electronic music collaboration, pushing the boundaries of spatial audio production. The composition evolved through an intricate process of layering – from Sean’s initial synth and beat concepts to Justin’s bass and melodic contributions.

The track becomes a playground of sonic exploration, featuring Nick Tatashi’s guitar, Sundar Viswanathan’s saxophone, and an innovative approach to Foley sounds. Justin spent weeks recording utensils, using Sound Particles software to create impossible sonic landscapes – imagine knives and forks dancing around your head in a three-dimensional soundscape.

Visually, the piece is complemented by Tamar Alana’s mesmerizing dance performance, using shawls and poi to create a visual representation of the music’s spatial dynamics. The result is more than a song – it’s a cinematic, immersive experience that blurs the lines between music, sound design, and visual art.

“Tapestry” represents a bold statement in modern music production: technology and composition in constant, creative dialogue, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sound.
