Immersive Tabla Recording | Behind Immersed: Episode 20

Unraveling the art of tabla recording reveals a meticulous approach to capturing one of North India’s most intricate percussion instruments. By combining multiple microphone techniques – including Schoeps MK4 condensers, a Samar VL37 ribbon mic, and four DPA 4006 overhead mics – we’ve created a recording approach that preserves both the instrument’s intimate details and its expansive sonic character.

The recording strategy focuses on three key elements: precise close-mic placement for detailed sound, strategic mono positioning for balanced immersive presentation, and overhead height channel mics to capture the instrument’s natural air and room resonance. This method allows for incredible flexibility in mixing, enabling multiple layers and textures while maintaining the tabla’s authentic performance essence.

Whether you’re an audio engineer, world music enthusiast, or sonic explorer, this recording technique offers a masterclass in capturing the subtle complexities of traditional instrumentation in an immersive audio environment.
