Immersive Tanpura Recording | Behind Immersed: Episode 19

Dive into the intricate world of East Indian classical music recording, where three tanpuras transform a studio into a living, breathing musical ecosystem. Our innovative recording approach uses a sophisticated microphone array – including Neumann m1 49 LCR and m1 50 omni directional mics – to create an unprecedented spatial representation of this ancient drone instrument. The tanpura, with its gourd body and long wooden neck, isn’t just an instrument; it’s a sonic generator that creates a harmonic foundation for raga music.

By carefully positioning and tuning these instruments, we’ve captured their natural buzzing resonance (the distinctive jivadi technique) that produces a rich, layered overtone series. Our goal was simple yet ambitious: recreate the immersive experience of being surrounded by perfectly tuned tanpuras. The result is a sonic landscape that transports listeners directly onto the stage, hearing the instruments exactly as a performer would – with depth, vibration, and pure harmonic complexity. Featured on tracks “Beyond” and “Pendulum”, this recording represents a breakthrough in capturing the organic, living essence of traditional Indian musical instrumentation.
