Immersed

Immersed is a cinematic album composed, recorded, and produced from the ground up for immersive audio. Featuring 38 artists from around the world, the project places the listener at the center of a 360-degree orchestra. Mixed and produced in Dolby Atmos and paired with a full-length film, Immersed synthesizes original composition, immersive audio production, and visual storytelling to reimagine how music can be experienced.

Created by Juno Award-winning bassist, producer, and engineer Justin Gray, Immersed celebrates artistry and collaboration, drawing on diverse musical influences that include jazz, Indian classical, and global music traditions. The film’s stunning visuals connect the audience to the musicians in the studio, capturing the joy and intensity of the recording process in dialogue with dance, art, and the natural world.

“I’m certain that this record will come to be seen as a key benchmark in spatial music production—and a must-hear for any artist, engineer, and producer seeking to explore the realm of immersive audio.”

    Jonathan Cornell (Immersive Audio Album)

“This album immediately stands out as something unique and groundbreaking in this format.”

    Matt Anderson (Tape Op Magazine)

“It’s one of the most impressive albums I’ve ever heard. Bravo!”

    Laila Biali (CBC Radio)

“Immersed, the new album from Justin Gray, is one of the biggest and most welcome musical surprises of 2025. It is the complete package and is certain to engage and entertain so many audiences. This album is a complete success that easily makes a spot for itself among the best of this year’s top new overall albums.”

    Phil’s Picks

“This is on another level. Though the soundstage is surreal, with different point sources often attacking from all directions, during other passages the speakers seem to disappear entirely—as if you are really there, surrounded by all the different musicians.”

    Jonathan Cornell (Immersive Audio Album)

“This is what all jazz done in Atmos should sound like. Songs like this are what will help push the boundaries and show people what’s actually possible when you approach Atmos with immersive intent from the start.”

    Matt Anderson (Tape Op Magazine)

“Even when you consider the history and years of innovation in this space, I’m not sure anything quite so ambitious as Justin Gray’s new album Immersed has ever been attempted.”

    Jonathan Cornell (Immersive Audio Album)

“What Justin has done here is really inspiring and amazing to me. I truly believe this music will help establish a benchmark for immersive music production.”

    Matt Anderson (Tape Op Magazine)

“Immersed is a landmark achievement in cinematic music presentation. It doesn’t just document performance; it transforms performance into an environment.”

Emily Johnson (Music & Dance Film Festival)

“Immersed is absolutely worth seeking out for anyone interested in surround or immersive music. The experience is absolutely mind-boggling, regardless of whether you’re listening in 9.1.6, 5.1, or any size speaker array between those extremes. Even the binaural rendering presents a startling degree of depth and spaciousness.”

    Jonathan Cornell (Immersive Audio Album)

“It’s a redefinition of how sound and image coexist. The use of Dolby Atmos as a storytelling tool rather than just a technical feature makes the experience spatially profound, situating the viewer inside a living, breathing orchestra.”

Mia Nguyen (Music & Dance Film Festival)

“Like a documentary without words. The musicians, dancers, visuals and sound told the story through the art. 1000 words couldn’t describe 1 second of this experience. A shared learning experience that is only possible through great art.”

    Dan Mock Music

“Those with surround sound systems will really appreciate the time and effort that Gray put into making this record sound so good; a treat for the eyes and for the ears. Immersed is a success from every angle, unquestionably among the best of this year’s new overall albums.”

    Phil’s Picks

“This film’s true strength lies in how it celebrates the diversity of culture, of music, of collaboration, weaving them into a seamless cinematic fabric.”

Alan Martinez (Music & Dance Film Festival)

“Hearing Indian classical textures blend seamlessly with jazz, world, and contemporary arrangements was breathtaking. The collaboration of 38 artists created a global tapestry of sound that felt both intimate and universal.”

Oscar Fernandez Rodriguez (Music & Dance Film Festival)

“There were moments when I closed my eyes and tears came from the sheer beauty of the voices and instruments surrounding me. It felt like being inside a prayer.”

Aliona Canis (Music & Dance Film Festival)

“I’ve never felt music like this before. It wasn’t just on the screen or in the speakers; it was all around me, like I was sitting inside the performance itself.”

        The Making of IMMERSED

My goal with Immersed was to create an album in immersive audio from the ground up, not to showcase a format, but to express music in a way I’ve long imagined. As a composer and producer, I’m inspired by the potential of multi-channel sound to surround the audience, placing them at the center of the ensemble, with musicians playing toward them from all directions.

A central theme in this music is the use of space. With each piece, I imagined where every part would live in an immersive environment, treating the Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 layout as a sonic canvas. Creating this album was a personal journey of weaving composition and production into one unified expression. The immersive mix isn’t an interpretation of the music but the composition itself.
Justin Gray setting up an immersive microphone array
Producing this music for immersive audio meant recording every sound in three dimensions. With the spatial arrangements already conceived, the challenge was to capture each layer so it would sit naturally in its intended place. This involved mic placement techniques designed to capture both direct sound and specific reflections, using a variety of immersive microphone arrays.

Another key part of the process was installing a Dolby Atmos playback system in the control room. This gave us real-time feedback as the music developed in three dimensions, allowing performers to hear their parts spatially. Bringing artists into the control room to experience their contributions in immersive audio expanded their creativity throughout the recording and production.
Immersive mic array at the Aga Khan concert hall
I have a long-standing relationship with the artistic team at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, home to one of my favourite concert halls. The sound of that space is deeply familiar to me, and I wanted its reverberation to be part of this album. The Museum allowed me to re-amp select performances, playing parts through a loudspeaker and capturing the hall’s natural acoustics with immersive microphone arrays. The results were transformative. The reverberation didn’t just add effect, it became part of the arrangement, bringing depth, warmth, and dimension I couldn’t replicate digitally.
        Drew Jurecka
        Morten Lindberg
        Michael Romanowski
When mixing the stereo version, I worked closely with co-producer Drew Jurecka to create a dedicated mix that is not just an extension of the immersive production, but a dedicated mix that honours the music uniquely. I was not concerned with comparing the versions to each other, as my goal is for each mix to communicate the music’s emotional intent without compromise. Morten Lindberg also contributed to the immersive production, and Michael Romanowski mastered the album in all formats.
        Cinematographer Michael Fisher
From the start, I wanted this to be more than an audio experience, so I partnered with long-time collaborator and cinematographer Michael Fisher to create a full-length film. Our goal was to visually connect the audience to the musicians and instruments in the studio, capturing the joy and intensity of the recording process. The result is a cinematic performance film that reflects the spirit of the music in dialogue with dance, art, and the natural world.
Justin Gray & the Immersed team – musicians, dancers, producers
Creating this album has been a deeply collaborative journey. Every part of the process was shaped by professionals whose insight, experience, and creative energy are woven into the fabric of the music. Looking back, Immersed reflects a shared vision that celebrates the power of community and the spirit of collaboration. At its core, the album is a synthesis of composition, performance, production, and technology; a personal expression of how music can be created, shared, and experienced in new ways.
